Karma Overlay 28 is a top-quality acoustic floor panel that offers exceptional sound insulation without increasing the height of the floor too much. It comprises an 18mm tongue and grooved P5 chipboard that is bonded to a 10mm resilient layer made of cross-linked polyolefin foam. The product is suitable for various applications and can be installed on existing floors, new ply or chipboard floors, or directly on concrete or screed floors, making it ideal for both refurbishment and new build projects.

Typical applications of Karma Overlay 28 include new build apartments, hotels, student accommodations, and houses with timber joist floors that require pre-completion testing. It is also suitable for refurbishment projects where reliable performance is required but there are height restrictions. Additionally, the product can be used in the RD FFT5 floor options for E-FC-1, E-FC-2, or E-FS-1.

Application & Installation

  • Storage:
    • To ensure optimal performance, all components should be kept indoors, under cover, and in dry conditions. Panels should be stacked flat on a level surface. Materials should be acclimatized to the environment in which they will be fixed for at least 24 hours prior to installation.
  • Subfloor Tolerances:
    • The evenness tolerances of the subfloor should not exceed +/- 2mm per 2 metre run. The base floor must also be clean and completely dried out, and free of pipes and other obstacles.
  • Partitions:
    • Lightweight, non-load bearing partitions can be supported on top of Karma Overlay 28 boards.
  • Expansion Provision:
    • Expansion provision should be calculated at a rate of 2mm per metre run. This can be provided in a gap around perimeter walls, but intermediate expansion joints may be needed on long runs of flooring.
  • Tiling:
    • The top surface of Overlay 28 should be primed before tiling. A flexible tile adhesive and flexible grout compatible with the P5 chipboard top surface should be used to accommodate the movement of the substrate.
  • Installation Procedure:
    • During installation, place Karma 5mm thick x 100mm wide flanking strip between Karma Overlay 28 and perimeter walls and existing door frames to reduce flanking sound transmission.
    • Lay Karma Overlay 28 with the grooved edges or cut edges facing the perimeter walls. Use the offcut from the final panel in the first row to commence the next row. Do not start a row with an offcut less than 250mm long. Lay panels in a brick-bonded fashion.
    • While laying boards, apply a generous amount of Karma PU adhesive to the grooves of the T&G joint and tightly butt the boards together. Wipe off excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Avoid walking on the boards until the adhesive has dried.
